Xbox has announced Xbox Labs – a new initiative that apparently responds to the boom in game ports and re-compilations built with generative AI. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma shared this in an email to staff, which was published on Xbox Wire. Notably, according to Eurogamer, the words “AI” or “generative AI” do not appear in the announcement at all.
What Exactly is Xbox Labs?
The announcement doesn't provide a clear answer. Sharma writes that in recent weeks, games have been “rapidly decompiled and rebuilt” to run on hardware they were never intended for. Even more surprisingly: many of the world’s biggest games have been “remixed” into the source code of other games.
According to Sharma, such experiments challenge long-held industry assumptions – such as the connection between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and the way people discover games. Xbox Labs aims to explore precisely that.
- Leadership: Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, previously responsible for Azure for OpenAI at Microsoft.
- Team: “a small group of game developers, engineers, and scientists.”
- Goal: to transform new ideas into things that players and developers can experience.
- Motto: build in public, learn from user behavior, and measure success by whether more people play and create.

Why Does Sharma Speak of Agents Instead of AI?
Sharma argues that coding is the first major application area for agents because they can write, execute, and test software. Games have similar characteristics. She also cites a figure: players spend more than 72 billion hours annually on Xbox games – about five times as much time as is estimated to be spent worldwide on writing code.
How Does This Fit In?
The timing is no coincidence: just a few days ago, Google and Unity announced their own platforms that allow users to create games via text input. Whether Microsoft intends to do the same with Labs remains open due to the vague announcement. Xbox had also recently introduced its new XP division for non-gaming partnerships.
We have already covered Sharma’s overall strategy: Xbox Head Sharma on Surviving Without Rehashing the Past. And how sensitive AI topics are in the industry is also shown by the report on Epic's “AI First” approach for the Disney shooter.
From our perspective, the choice of words is strategic: generative AI is a hot-button issue for many players, and Xbox is apparently preferring to test the waters first to see how the community reacts to the experiment. It will be exciting to see if “Labs” turn into real products – or just marketing.
