Wild Arms Successor “Armed Fantasia” Apparently Canceled for Good

It's bitter news for everyone who has been hoping for a worthy spiritual successor to Wild Arms since 2022: Armed Fantasia: To the End of the Wilderness has apparently been definitively canceled. Digital Bros, the Italian parent company of 505 Games, confirmed the project's discontinuation on September 24, 2026, as part of its financial results for the past fiscal year (ending June 30, 2026). The decision continues to be widely discussed today, September 27, by outlets like Kotaku, among others, because the actual confirmation came three days ago — what's new is primarily how many editorial teams and fans are only now reacting to it.

In addition to Armed Fantasia, Digital Bros also cut the titles Directorate: Novitiate and a sequel to Battle Islands in the same financial report. The documents mention approximately 17.6 million Euros in write-offs related to discontinued projects, in addition to an impairment of about one million Euros. Digital Bros did not separately detail how much of this specifically relates to Armed Fantasia. According to consistent reports, the company cites current market conditions and the costs that would have been necessary to complete the games as reasons.

The cancellation decision is particularly impactful because Armed Fantasia was anything but a fresh, immature project. According to an update on the official Kickstarter page, the development, led by Wild Arms creator Akifumi Kaneko, delivered a complete vertical slice to the publisher in March 2026. Four years after the campaign started, the game was therefore playable and in an advanced stage of development — yet it was still not continued.

What Does the Cancellation Mean for Kickstarter Backers?

The joint Kickstarter campaign for Armed Fantasia and the Shadow Hearts successor Penny Blood raised nearly three million US dollars in 2022 and was one of the bigger success stories in JRPG crowdfunding at the time. However, there has been no official announcement yet that backers will receive a refund. For Kickstarter projects, generally, a refund is not legally guaranteed if the team has demonstrably attempted to deliver the game — and with a complete vertical slice, this can hardly be disputed in the case of Armed Fantasia. Whether Digital Bros or the development team will nonetheless decide on a gesture towards the community is currently open. How Often Are Successfully Funded Crowdfunded Games Actually Canceled?

Armed Fantasia is not an isolated case. For Wild Arms fans, this leaves a particularly bitter taste, as the series has been waiting for a true comeback for years — and with Armed Fantasia, at least a spiritual successor seemed within reach.
