Today marks the release of Trails in the Sky: 2nd Chapter, Falcom's remake-sequel to the JRPG classic – and the first reviews from major publications are in. IGN and PC Gamer have published their reviews, and the tenor is consistently positive.
How Good Is Trails in the Sky: 2nd Chapter, According to Early Reviews?
IGN and PC Gamer are equally impressed in their reviews: The remake builds upon the solid foundation of the first chapter and delivers a significantly denser, darker story centered around Estelle Bright's search for the missing Joshua and the confrontation with the secret organization Ouroboros. Special praise is given to how the team utilizes the modernized 3D presentation to build atmosphere – PC Gamer even highlights a single monster design in its review, stating that it's among the most memorable in the entire JRPG series.
Do I Need to Play Trails in the Sky: 1st Chapter to Understand the Story?
This is the core question both reviews address in detail – and for good reason. For years, the Trails series has been notoriously difficult for newcomers to get into, as almost every installment directly follows the previous one. The original Trails in the Sky was initially released only on PC and older handhelds like the PSP, making it difficult for many fans of the newer Cold Steel spin-offs to start. With the 3D remake of 1st Chapter last year and now 2nd Chapter, Falcom is noticeably lowering this entry barrier: Those who have played 1st Chapter can jump right in seamlessly, but even without prior knowledge, the story is said to remain understandable according to the testers, as the most important events are briefly summarized at the beginning.
