CD Projekt CEO Adam Badowski has revealed some exciting new details about The Witcher 4 at the International Festival of Comics and Games in Lodz, Poland. His most important statement: the RPG's story is constantly being rewritten during development. While that might sound like chaos, Badowski says it's precisely the opposite.
Why is The Witcher 4's Story Constantly Being Rewritten?
Badowski explained on stage in Lodz that the long development time for The Witcher 4 is primarily due to the studio placing immense importance on the narrative. The plot is therefore constantly being revised and rewritten to ensure it ultimately delivers maximum emotional impact and genuinely resonates with players, rather than feeling hollow. CD Projekt Red evidently prefers to refine it multiple times rather than simply greenlighting a first draft.
Ciri once again takes center stage in the new saga, succeeding Geralt as a witcher and leading the series in a new direction. According to Badowski, the targeted release period remains unchanged: CD Projekt Red is still aiming for 2028 as the target for release. There is no concrete date yet, which is hardly surprising for a game of this magnitude.
Is a The Witcher 2 Remake Also on the Horizon?
When asked about a possible remake of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Badowski remained vague but offered a clear hint: Jakub Rokosz, co-founder and head of Fool’s Theory, is a huge fan of the second installment and considers it his personal favorite Witcher game. Fool’s Theory is currently working on the remake of the very first The Witcher, and this very team is also building the technical foundation for the new saga. An official remake of Part 2 is far from confirmed, but the door is at least ajar.

Our Take: That a story is being rewritten multiple times might, at first, sound like even more patience is required from fans who have been waiting years for The Witcher 4. Nevertheless, from our perspective, this is a good sign. Especially after the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, it's reassuring that CD Projekt Red prefers to work thoroughly rather than quickly on the narrative. If the end result is a Ciri story that truly gets under your skin, every extra revision round will have been worth the wait.
