For a long time, there was silence regarding the exact timeline for The Witcher 4 – now, CD Projekt Red has for the first time named a concrete release window as part of a Gamescom 2026 announcement: The studio "is targeting" a release in 2028. Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski described the upcoming RPG in a video message as "our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date."
When Exactly Will The Witcher 4 Be Released?
CD Projekt Red deliberately did not name an exact date – the phrase "targeting 2028" consciously gives the studio leeway should development shift. This confirms what many fans had already feared: Several years will pass between the official announcement of the project and the actual release. As a reminder: Its predecessor, The Witcher 3, also took over three years from its announcement to release, yet it remains one of the highest-rated RPGs of all time.
Which Platforms Will The Witcher 4 Run On?
A 2028 release inevitably raises the question of target hardware. Given the timeframe, it is considered likely that The Witcher 4 will be technically more tailored to upcoming console generations like PS6 and the next Xbox generation, even if CD Projekt Red has not yet released an official platform list. Current consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X are unlikely to be the primary target platform given the long time horizon.
Why Is CD Projekt Red Taking So Much Time With The Release?
From our perspective, the cautious communication is understandable: After the massive issues surrounding Cyberpunk 2077's rocky launch in 2020, CD Projekt Red publicly announced that in the future, they prefer to deliver games later, but with greater technical polish. The early, but deliberately vague announcement of a release window instead of a fixed date fits precisely into this new communication pattern – the studio apparently does not want to put itself under self-imposed time pressure again.
