The Witcher 3 Remastered: CD Projekt Red Aims for Free Update to Feel Like a 2026 Release

On September 29th, a free Remastered update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming, automatically available to all owners of the game. In a conversation with PC Gamer, CD Projekt Red has now commented on the ambitions behind the project – and they are significantly higher than “just sharper textures.”

Why Does CD Projekt Red Want to Deliver More Than Just a Graphics Update?

According to the studio, the goal from the outset was for The Witcher 3 to feel like a game that could just as easily be released today, in 2026 – not like an eleven-year-old title with just a new graphical polish on top. The developers emphasize that modern improvements to lighting, combat feel, and the technical foundation have become so commonplace that a return to the old standard would be almost unimaginable.

Will the Remaster Also Benefit New Players?

That's precisely the main draw: Players who have never experienced The Witcher 3 before should, after the update, notice no difference from a regular, freshly released open-world RPG. For fans who already know the game inside and out, this primarily means noticeably improved technology, without altering the core game design.

Context: This places CD Projekt Red within a larger trend where studios don't just repackage older successful titles, but fundamentally overhaul them technologically – comparable to what has recently been observed with other major remasters. The difference here: For The Witcher 3, the update remains completely free for existing owners, which, given its scope, is anything but standard practice and further benefits the already loyal community.
