Supermassive Games: Over 70 Developers Leave the Studio

Bad news for the developers behind Directive 8020 and the original Until Dawn: Supermassive Games has reportedly lost more than 70 employees. The wave of layoffs appears to have concluded this week.

What Happened at Supermassive Games?

The hint comes from a LinkedIn post by Frank Tindle, the studio's now-former IT and Facilities Director. He wrote that over 70 people left Supermassive, including developers, artists, producers, QA, and operations. An official statement regarding the final figures is not yet available to us.

The studio had already announced this step in August. At the time, there was talk of a consultation process that could result in the loss of up to 75 colleagues. The measure was stated as necessary to secure the company's future. You can find more details in our report on the third wave of layoffs since 2024.

How Hard Does This Hit the Studio?

The number is thus at the upper end of the announced range. Already in July 2025, Supermassive had cut up to 36 positions, which, according to Eurogamer, led to the postponement of Directive 8020. The sci-fi horror game was released in May 2026 and divided the community: the characters and cast were praised, but the stealth gameplay displeased many.

What Does This Mean for Upcoming Supermassive Games?

The source does not name specific projects. What is clear is that the studio still intends to create narrative games for a loyal audience. How much capacity remains for this after the attrition is uncertain – we should not speculate here.

From our perspective, this case joins a long series of studio cutbacks, which we recently also saw at Ninja Theory. For those affected, we hope they quickly find new jobs.
