Star Wars: The Old Republic is getting one of its biggest system overhauls in years with the upcoming Game Update 8.0: Developer Star Wars: The Old Republic is introducing three selectable difficulty levels for solo and non-group content, while also aiming to make it easier for players to jump back into the classic SWTOR experience. Internally, the update is codenamed “Masters of the Force” and is already playable on the Public Test Server.
What exactly changes with the new difficulty levels?
The three new tiers – Story, Veteran, and Master – will apply to class stories, daily zones, world boss fights, and other non-instanced solo activities. They will regulate how much damage you take, how effective healing is, and how much experience you gain. Players who want to enjoy the story at a relaxed pace should choose Story. Those who prefer more challenging combat can opt for Veteran or Master.
- Three selectable difficulty levels for solo content: Story, Veteran, Master
- Affects damage taken, healing received, and XP gain
- Applies to class stories, daily zones, and world boss encounters
- New “Restart” path for a fresh start in the game
- Update is named “Masters of the Force”, brings the Ryloth region and a higher level cap of 85
- Already playable on the Public Test Server, full release announced for late 2026
Why is the 'Restart' mode coming now, of all times?
SWTOR is now over a decade old: The game was released in late 2011 under BioWare and transitioned completely to the independent studio Broadsword in 2023, which has since been solely responsible for content and further development. This very change in operators explains why so much energy is now being invested in facilitating easier entry: Broadsword must actively attract new and returning players to sustain the game long-term, without alienating the dedicated veteran community with overly strong simplifications. The tiered difficulty levels are a compromise designed to serve both camps: easy entry for newcomers, a genuine challenge for veterans.
For active players, this specifically means: those who have already played through their characters don't have to do anything – the new options are additional, not mandatory. However, those looking for a genuine fresh start will get a dedicated path for it with Update 8.0 for the first time, without having to rely on a complete account change.
