In July, Sony announced it would completely cease production of physical PlayStation discs by early 2028. Now, according to a report from Eurogamer, there's new movement on the matter: the company has reportedly surveyed developers in an unusually large poll about the future of physical games – a move that fuels speculation about a potential U-turn.
What's Behind Sony's Disc Phase-Out Survey?
The story originates from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, which reported on the Broken Silicon Podcast about a survey Sony allegedly sent to developer studios. According to reports, it is one of the largest surveys the company has ever distributed. One of the questions is said to indirectly target whether studios have an issue with how Sony currently distributes physical games – essentially a reaction to its own decision to phase out discs. Eurogamer picked up the story, followed shortly by Push Square, Beebom, and Dexerto.
Is Sony Really Reversing Its Digital-Only Decision?
As tempting as the idea of a U-turn sounds: it's probably not that simple. Sony CFO Lin Tao emphasized only this summer that despite the headwinds, they would “cautiously” stick to the plan for early 2028. Games released before the deadline are still expected to receive disc reprints. Industry veteran Richard Browne, who has worked for Sony and Tencent, among others, also dismisses the idea: he's unaware of any strategy change, stating all publishers are still preparing for a disc-less PlayStation from 2028 onwards. So, the survey alone isn't proof of a rollback – but it does show that Sony is taking the community's discontent more seriously than previously thought.
One data point likely made Sony take particular notice: According to a market analysis by Alinea Analytics, approximately 23 percent of Marvel’s Wolverine's revenue in the first three days of sale came from disc sales. This means physical games are still selling well, even for major first-party titles.

Why Is the Debate Around PlayStation Discs So Heated?
The backstory dates back to 2020: Even with the PS5, Sony released a Digital Edition without a disc drive alongside the standard console, early testing how well a purely digital ecosystem would be received. However, the disc phase-out decision announced in July went significantly too far for many fans – since then, discontent has persisted in forums and social networks. For players, it's about more than nostalgia: Without discs, the ability to buy or sell used games disappears, collections lose value, and those who want to play offline will be completely reliant on the PlayStation Store and functioning download servers in the future.
From our perspective, the survey is primarily a signal: Sony is at least listening. Whether this leads to a genuine course correction or merely cosmetic concessions, such as longer transition periods, remains open. This will also be exciting to watch with a view to the next PlayStation generation – if the PS6 is indeed due in a few years, Sony will likely have to finalize its disc strategy by then at the latest.
