Ubisoft pulled a real surprise out of the hat at Gamescom Opening Night Live: Rainbow Six: Tactics, a completely turn-based single-player tactical game developed by Ubisoft Paris. This marks a significant step for the brand – there hasn't been a pure single-player entry in the series for almost 19 years, ever since the franchise fully shifted its focus to live-service multiplayer with Siege.
What is Rainbow Six: Tactics?
Instead of real-time shooter action, Tactics features an isometric, turn-based campaign clearly inspired by XCOM: cover, line of sight, destructible environments, and tactical positioning are central, rather than quick reflexes. Particularly noteworthy: Ubisoft explicitly emphasizes that there will be no additional monetization – no in-game shop, no live-service framework, just a complete single-player experience.
Which Operators are Available at Launch?
At launch, 15 Operators familiar from Siege will be playable, each with their respective gadgets and unique skill trees, including:
- Sledge with his breaching hammer for spontaneous wall breaches
- Ash with her breaching charge abilities
- Doc with healing abilities for the team
- Montagne with his tactical shield
- Glaz with his sniper profile
How Does Tactics Fit into Rainbow Six History?
For context: Rainbow Six originally began as a tactical single-player series before later installments like Vegas increasingly shifted the focus towards third-person action, and finally Siege moved entirely towards competitive multiplayer. With Tactics, the brand is effectively returning to its tactical roots – but in a turn-based strategy format rather than a real-time shooter. For fans who never quite warmed up to Siege due to its pure multiplayer focus, this could be a completely new way to experience the brand.

Rainbow Six: Tactics is set to release in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
