PUBG is Getting a Netflix Series – Donald Glover to Write, Produce, and Star

Yes, it's real: PUBG is getting a live-action series on Netflix. Donald Glover is set to write, produce, and appear in the show himself. IGN even reports that he will direct and play the lead role. Krafton, the brand owner, is behind the project.

Who is Behind the PUBG Series on Netflix?

In addition to Donald Glover, his brother Stephen Glover is also involved, credited as co-writer and executive producer. According to the press release, additional executive producers include Michael Schaefer for Neon TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H. LV3H is Krafton's entertainment division. The South Korean conglomerate aims to deliberately expand the brand into “original entertainment content.” The announcement does not yet mention a release date.

How is a Series About a Battle Royale Supposed to Work?

At first glance, it seems challenging: 100 players land on an island and fight until only one remains. However, PUBG now has a backstory, which you can read on the official website. According to this lore, the Battlegrounds are the brainchild of billionaire Sergei Kalimnik, who, in 1965, was the sole survivor of a Soviet attack on the fictional island of Erangel. He later bought the island and recreated his traumatic experiences on a massive scale. The experiments then expanded to other locations. IGN draws a comparison to Squid Game: there, too, powerful elites watch from afar.

What Does This Mean for PUBG Fans?

Nothing will directly change in the game. But a series brings attention to the brand. From our perspective, the lore foundation is surprisingly robust, as long as the series aims to be more than just a constant shootout. With Glover, whom many know from Atlanta, Community, and Swarm, there is at least creative talent on board. Whether it becomes a hit depends on how boldly Netflix adapts the dark source material. A cast, a release date, and a first trailer are still pending.
