Grinding Gear Games has announced the first event league for Path of Exile 2: “Forbidden Rites” launches on September 4, 2026, and is set to significantly amp up the popular Ritual mechanic. Instead of occasional waves of monsters at altars, players in the new league will be served almost exclusively boss encounters – the community has already summed it up perfectly: “Oops, all bosses.”
Alongside the new league, the studio is also tackling the game’s least popular endgame mode: the “Trial of Chaos.” It will be fundamentally revamped as part of the update to make it more accessible to a wider variety of player types than before.
What exactly is changing about the Ritual mechanic in Forbidden Rites?
- Ritual altars will significantly more often spawn multiple bosses instead of regular monster waves
- Defeated Unique enemies will “travel” with you to the next area and must be fought again there
- This creates longer multi-boss chains instead of individual short rituals
- The endgame mode “Trial of Chaos” will be comprehensively reworked and made more accessible
- Event League Start: September 4, 2026
Who is the New Event League For?
Players who enjoy fighting over farming in Path of Exile 2 will likely find particular joy in “Forbidden Rites”: The concentrated boss encounters mean more loot opportunities per unit of time, but also noticeably increased difficulty, as the unique enemies that travel with you can form veritable gauntlets. Therefore, build your character for endurance and repeatability in combat rather than pure loot collection between encounters.
From our perspective, the rework of the “Trial of Chaos” is almost bigger news than the new league itself: Since the launch of Path of Exile 2, this mode has been considered one of the most frustrating endgame components because it offered little control over one’s own progression. The fact that Grinding Gear Games is addressing it now, simultaneously with a major event league, shows how seriously the studio has apparently taken community feedback over the past months.
