Bad news for everyone still playing NBA 2K25: 2K has announced it will remove the title from all online stores on October 30, 2026. Online content will be shut down on December 31.
The announcement appeared on the game's Steam page and was picked up by VGC and Nintendo Life.
What Exactly Is Happening with NBA 2K25?
- October 30, 2026: NBA 2K25 disappears from online stores, and new purchases will no longer be possible.
- After delisting: Those who already own the game can still re-download it.
- December 31, 2026: All online content will be shut down; starting January 2027, there will be no more online modes.
Which Game Modes Are Affected?
Particularly impactful: MyCareer and MyTeam, the two most popular modes, rely on virtual currency and online progression. After the servers are gone, they will no longer be playable. According to Nintendo Life, only the "Play Now" mode will remain on the Switch – and even that without online multiplayer. The Switch version doesn't have modes like MyNBA, The W, or MyWNBA anyway.
Important for owners: Anyone who has purchased virtual currency or content will no longer be able to use it after the shutdown. We did not find details about what happens to outstanding balances in the source – if in doubt, it's worth checking 2K's official notices.
Why Is This Relevant for Sports Game Buyers?
Server shutdowns in sports games are nothing new – Nintendo Life reminds us that NBA 2K fans are familiar with them. The problem: Anyone who builds up years of progress loses it with the server shutdown. From our perspective, this case shows how fragile games that heavily rely on live services can be. While there will be successors like NBA 2K26 and 2K27 on Switch 2, whether their MyCareer and MyTeam modes will suffer the same fate remains to be seen – Nintendo Life expects it.
