Modern Warfare 4 seemingly marks the end of an era. Activision's Head of Marketing, Tyler Bahl, stated in an interview with The Game Business that the shooter is “in a lot of ways, this is going to be the epic conclusion” to the recent Modern Warfare series. Concurrently, the game aims to open a new chapter for Call of Duty.
What Did Activision Say About the End of the Modern Warfare Series?
Bahl emphasized that they are “excited by closing this chapter and launching a new one”. The conclusion doesn't mean everything will vanish: individual characters and elements could live on and be reimagined. According to Bahl, for the future, the audience wants “new, or better, or different”.
The surrounding landscape is also in motion. A live-action film for the brand is currently in development. Furthermore, Treyarch has announced something that “nobody’s experienced before”. Activision has not yet provided details on this.
Why Is It Difficult to Appeal to All Call of Duty Fans?
Bahl conceded that with such a large player base, it's almost impossible to make everyone happy. The community is incredibly diverse: Zombies fans, Black Ops devotees against Modern Warfare loyalists, and players who primarily enjoy Prop Hunt.
From our perspective, this is an honest assessment of the problem. Every installment must simultaneously cater to veterans, casual players, and mode specialists. A clean break after MW4 could help by creating space for fresh ideas. At the same time, the statement raises expectations, because “new” is easily said but difficult to deliver. How radical the change will be remains to be seen. In a related vein, we previously reported that Activision is working on a completely new sub-franchise.
For players, this means: Those who have followed the story of the current Modern Warfare trilogy will likely get a conclusion with MW4. Those who are more eager for something new can hope for a fresh start afterwards. Whether both can be achieved simultaneously will only become clear after the release.
When Is Modern Warfare 4 Releasing and For Which Platforms?
