Modern Warfare 4: Infinity Ward Kicks Off DMZ Early – Dashes PvE Hopes

Infinity Ward has clarified several things at once regarding Modern Warfare 4: DMZ is launching early, and the hoped-for pure PvE mode won't be happening. We'll break down what this means for you.

When Exactly Does DMZ Launch in Modern Warfare 4?

The extraction mode DMZ will be playable starting October 20th – however, this is only for those who have digitally pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. This means the shooter effectively has three launch dates:

  • October 16: The campaign will be unlocked.
  • October 20: DMZ launches for digital pre-orderers.
  • October 23: Official launch including multiplayer on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.

We previously covered the DMZ early access in our report on DMZ Early Access. What's new now is the surrounding context.

Is There a Pure PvE Mode in DMZ?

In short: no. An early gameplay video showed a playlist called “Single Squad Mission,” which many interpreted as a solo mode without other players. It was missing in a later trailer – this caused confusion, which we have already reported on.

Infinity Ward has now responded in a Reddit Q&A. They stated that the playlist was a developer playlist never intended for the public, merely allowing the team to load into a match alone. In the final game, you can choose to play solo by disabling “Squad Fill” – however, this doesn't guarantee that the lobby will consist only of solo players.

What Does the Early Access Offer Players?

This is new for the series: while early access for the campaign has existed in Modern Warfare before, it's never been offered for a multiplayer mode. Additionally, DMZ has its own progression system. Players who jump in starting October 20th can collect items and get familiar with the map – a potential advantage when everyone else joins at launch. From our perspective, this is also a clever marketing move: streamers can play DMZ for an entire week, preventing the hype from fizzling out on a single launch day.

However, the explanation for the “Single Squad” playlist only half convinces us. Dev playlists typically don't need their own icons, and Infinity Ward didn't obscure that part in the video. So, anyone hoping for a PvE mode should temper their expectations.
