Good news for everyone who's been annoyed by wasted boosts for years: In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Double XP tokens will only expire when you are actually in a match. Infinity Ward has confirmed this, and IGN and other portals are reporting on it.
What's Changing with Double XP Tokens in Modern Warfare 4?
Previously: When you activated a token, the clock ticked down in real-time – regardless of whether you were playing, tinkering with loadouts in the lobby, or taking a short break. With the launch of Modern Warfare 4, that's over. The timer will now only count down during playtime in a match. If you leave the game, it pauses and only resumes when you're back in a public match.
- The countdown exclusively runs during ongoing matches.
- Most tokens last between 15 minutes and an hour.
- The timer stops in lobbies and menus.
- Tokens from current Call of Duty titles should be transferable to Modern Warfare 4.
What Does This Specifically Mean for You as a Player?
Practically speaking: You no longer have to activate a token „on a whim“ and then frantically search for matches before the time runs out. An hour of Double XP will now truly mean an hour of in-match playtime. Those who only play for a short while in the evenings will benefit most, as waiting times and menu marathons will no longer eat into their bonus. Every minute counts, especially when leveling up weapons and grinding the Battle Pass.
One point you should keep in mind: If your token reserves from previous titles are carried over, it's worth saving them for the release. Modern Warfare 4 will be released on October 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Those who pre-ordered digitally can play the campaign starting October 16. According to Activision, twelve new 6v6 maps will be available at launch.
Why Did This Take So Long?
This demand has been a perennial topic in the community, repeatedly voiced across several titles. From our perspective, the change is a small but very welcome step: It doesn't cost any player anything and removes a genuine source of frustration from the game. Critics will still note that Double XP tokens remain part of the shop and reward system. How generously Activision distributes tokens in the game will only become clear after the release.
