Good news for everyone who wants to crawl through the tunnels of Moscow again: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are getting a free next-gen update. At the same time, the Metro series has surpassed the 50 million copies sold mark – 16 years after the release of the first installment.
When Does the Next-Gen Update for Metro Redux Release?
The release is staggered: The update arrives on PC on October 22nd, and on consoles a week later, on October 29th. It's free for everyone who already owns the games – on PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Windows Store, and GOG, and on consoles for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The studio plans to release the full patch notes at launch.
What Exactly Changes in the Games?
The studio explicitly emphasizes: This is neither a remake nor a full-fledged remaster. The look and feel of the Redux versions will be preserved. Here's what the update brings:
- 4K textures on all platforms
- Improved animations, higher quality sound, and more environmental details
- PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S: native support, with PSSR on PS5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on Xbox Series X, and additional Spatial Audio on Xbox platforms
- Consoles run at native 4K/60 fps or upscaled 4K/120 fps on compatible displays, plus improved lighting, shadows, and particle effects, support for DualSense triggers and Xbox Impulse Triggers, hardware tessellation, and power-saving modes
- Xbox: Play Anywhere and handheld support
- PC: DLSS support, Spatial Audio, and quality-of-life improvements
- A range of bug fixes and quality-of-life changes requested by the community
Why is the Update Coming Now?
The timing is no coincidence. This update paves the way for Metro 2039, which is scheduled to release on February 4th. Those who want to replay the predecessors or experience them for the first time will now get them in a refreshed form, without paying a cent. The Redux versions themselves have been around since 2014 – so an update for the current console generation has long been overdue. For players, this means: If you already own the games, you don't have to buy anything, just await the download and plan for sufficient storage space, as 4K textures are rarely small.
From our perspective, this is a clever move: Instead of an expensive remaster, it's a gift to the fans, simultaneously generating attention for the series' reboot. We appreciate that the studio clearly states what the update isn't – preventing false expectations.
