Leak: Gameplay Footage from Canceled Perfect Dark Reboot Emerges

Important Note: This is a leak that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Microsoft, Xbox, or The Initiative.

The canceled Perfect Dark reboot is apparently back – at least as a video. Reports indicate that approximately two minutes of gameplay footage from the game have been circulating online for about 24 hours. Eurogamer is reporting on it and referencing MP1ST, which claims to have discovered the footage first.

What Does the Leaked Perfect Dark Video Show?

According to Eurogamer, the clip shows, among other things, the following:

  • Various weapons that protagonist Joanna Dark could use.
  • Several environments through which she was supposed to sneak and fight.
  • Bare-bones layouts of some level environments.
  • Early gunplay testing, which Eurogamer says looks very rudimentary.
  • A few abilities and even destructible fruit.

Where Does the Footage Come From and Is It Authentic?

According to MP1ST, the video is said to come from a VFX artist who has allegedly worked on several gaming franchises. Eurogamer emphasizes that the authenticity is difficult to assess, but the material "looks" as one would expect. We are therefore treating the leak with caution.

What Is Known About the Perfect Dark Reboot So Far?

The reboot of the Rare series was announced in December 2020 and was developed at Xbox studio The Initiative. Development was considered difficult, with Crystal Dynamics assisting at times. In May 2024, reports stated that "little significant" had happened since the reveal, and the game was in a "very raw state." A first trailer followed shortly after. A year later, the game was canceled in 2025 as part of Microsoft's wave of cutbacks. It was reportedly intended to have an episodic structure. Rumors that Take-Two had secured the rights apparently did not materialize.

From our perspective, the clip is primarily a bitter look back at a game that will likely never be played by anyone. Whether it contained a serious game cannot be concluded from two minutes of early test footage.
