Important Note: This is a rumor or a leak that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Valve.
A massive data package has reportedly been circulating online since the weekend, allegedly originating from an old, openly accessible Valve content server. We're talking about approximately 12 terabytes of material from the years 2003 to 2013 – including, according to reports, content that fans have been waiting for for almost two decades.
What is Allegedly Contained in the Leaked Data?
According to several reports, the package allegedly contains, among other things, a playable beta build of Portal 2 with a seemingly different GLaDOS version, early development versions of Left 4 Dead, and a 3D model of a weapon called “Weaponizer,” which is reportedly from the never-released Half-Life 2: Episode 3. However, a complete, playable Episode 3 build cannot be inferred from the current reports – so far, only this single asset seems to have surfaced.
How Credible is the Leak?
Reports suggest this isn't a classic hack, but rather human error: an outdated, supposedly long-forgotten server was simply left openly accessible. Valve has not yet confirmed anything – neither the authenticity nor the origin of the files. While the fact that several independent, established news outlets are reporting on it simultaneously speaks to a genuine core to the story, it doesn't change the fact that details like the alleged Episode 3 discovery should be treated with caution.
For the community, the mere mention of Episode 3 is, of course, explosive: Ever since the cliffhanger of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007, fans have been waiting for a continuation of Gordon Freeman's story. While Half-Life: Alyx in 2020 showed that Valve hasn't completely abandoned the series, it didn't provide a direct continuation of the episodic storyline. Any discovery, no matter how small, from that era accordingly reignites the eternal “Half-Life 3” debate – even if a single weapon model is far from a complete game.
