Just before one of the most important dates for Kingdom Hearts fans this year, Disney makes a remarkable announcement: The Disney Games Group officially counts Kingdom Hearts among its nine so-called “Billion-Dollar” gaming franchises – meaning brands that have generated over one billion US dollars in retail revenue since their launch. Kingdom Hearts reached this milestone since the first installment was released for PlayStation 2 in 2002.
What Other Brands Does Disney Count Among its Billion-Dollar Franchises?
In addition to Kingdom Hearts, Disney also named Marvel Strike Force as one of the gaming brands that have crossed this revenue threshold. The company has not yet fully published the exact remaining list, but its mention alone shows: Kingdom Hearts now stands alongside the most commercially successful gaming brands in Disney's entire portfolio – a clear signal of how seriously the series is taken internally.
What Can Fans Expect from the Kingdom Hearts D23 Panel?
The announcement's timing is no coincidence: On August 15, 2026, D23 will host a dedicated panel called “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts,” which is dedicated to the series' 25th anniversary. Given the timing, many fans hope to receive new information about Kingdom Hearts 4 there, whose development Square Enix and Disney have already officially confirmed.
Why Is Kingdom Hearts' Success So Remarkable?
From our perspective, the billion-dollar milestone is particularly interesting because Kingdom Hearts had to endure long dry spells between main installments – a fourteen-year gap lay between Kingdom Hearts II (2005) and Kingdom Hearts III (2019) alone, bridged only by spin-offs and mobile games. That the series still generated so much revenue underscores how loyal the fanbase has remained to the unusual crossover of Disney and Final Fantasy aesthetics for over two decades. For the community, this figure should primarily serve as further indication that Square Enix and Disney, after the long wait for Kingdom Hearts 4, do not intend to take another break this time but rather actively keep the franchise alive – including regular signs of life like this D23 panel.
