Indie Studio Calls for Piracy: Rather Steal Than Buy from Key Resellers

An unusual call from the indie scene: As GameStar reports, the studio behind the elemental roguelike Runeveil is publicly urging its community to illegally download the game if necessary, instead of acquiring it through certain Steam key resellers. A stance rarely heard so frankly from developers.

Why a Studio Calls for Piracy

The background: Many key reseller platforms purchase game keys cheaply in regions with lower prices and then resell them with a profit margin – often without developers earning any significant share. From the perspective of small indie teams, this means: Whoever buys through such providers primarily supports the middleman, not the actual studio. Against this backdrop, the Runeveil team apparently argues that a pirated version economically harms the studio hardly more than a purchase through a reseller who passes almost nothing on to the developers anyway.

What This Means for Players

For all those who want to support Runeveil, the message is clear: The official purchase directly through the Steam Store remains the way where the money actually reaches the team. From our perspective, the initiative is understandable, even if it is formulated unusually aggressively: Many indie studios struggle with slim margins, and a public appeal like this at least draws attention to a problem that is otherwise mostly whispered about in the scene. So, if you want to try Runeveil and genuinely help the studio, you should purchase it directly from Valve instead of third-party providers.
