Just before the weekend, there's double the reason to celebrate for fans of Helldivers 2: developer Arrowhead Game Studios today released the “Devoid of Liberty” update, and Sony is simultaneously adding the co-op shooter to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium subscribers. Those who have only heard about the title until now can jump into the fight against the Illuminate immediately at no extra cost.
What's New in the Devoid of Liberty Update
The patch notes are extensive, so we've summarized the most important points for you:
- Two new Illuminate enemy types: the “Crusher,” which regenerates during combat and must be kept under constant fire, and the agile “Wretch,” which can dodge and leap at Helldivers.
- New Planetary Modifier “SEAF Support”: Friendly SEAF ground troops will now fight alongside players.
- The level cap is doubled from 150 to 300 – significantly more room for unlocks and progression.
- New Warbond “Castellan’s Creed” with additional gear.
- Assist-Reload: Teammates can now reload you with ammo directly from their backpack.
- Balance adjustments to GATLING equipment: increased ammo capacity, more penetration, and noticeably faster handling.
Try it for Free and the Community Challenge
Anyone playing Helldivers 2 via PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium has full access to the base content, including the new update. Coinciding with the release, a community challenge is also running: If the entire Helldivers 2 player base collectively eliminates 500 million enemies by August 18th, four exclusive Helldiver avatars for the PlayStation console will be awarded on top.
Why the PS Plus Deal is a Big Step for Helldivers 2
Since its release in February 2024, Helldivers 2 has become one of Sony's biggest co-op successes, partly because the game was sold completely outside of subscription services for a long time. The fact that the title is now moving into the Game Catalog is a clear signal: Sony is banking on Helldivers 2 as a long-term hit rather than just a full-price success, and Arrowhead gains fresh momentum for further seasonal content thanks to the new community influx. For newcomers, this practically means: character progression, Warbonds, and unlocked gear are retained even after a potential end of PS Plus membership, so transitioning to purchasing the full version is possible at any time without loss.
