The GTA 6 release is approaching, and of all times, Microsoft is facing a squeeze: The Xbox Series X is currently listed as "Out of Stock" in the German Microsoft Store. According to PC Games Hardware, it costs 799.99 Euros – making it 150 Euros more expensive than the PS5 with a disc drive.
GTA 6 will be released on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Those who don't own a console yet are therefore faced with the question: which one?
How Much Do the Xbox Series X and PS5 Currently Cost?
- Xbox Series X (1 TB, Disc Drive): 799.99 Euros, out of stock in the Microsoft Store
- Xbox Series X Digital Edition (white): 749.99 Euros, also unavailable
- PS5 with Disc Drive (1 TB SSD): 649.99 Euros
- PS5 Digital Edition (825 GB): 599.99 Euros
- Xbox Series S: starting from 499.99 Euros
PCGH's retailer check on November 1st paints a mixed picture: Media Markt and Saturn are offering the black Series X at MSRP on individual pages. However, marketplace sellers are once again asking for 1,199.99 Euros, which is 400 Euros above the recommended retail price. Therefore, there's no talk of a nationwide sell-out.
Why Has the Xbox Series X Become So Expensive?
Microsoft increased the list price of the Series X by 200 Euros on August 1st. According to PCGH, the reason is the memory chip crisis, which caused production bottlenecks for the company as early as summer. As early as October 13th, third-party sellers saw extreme price hikes.
What Does This Mean for Anyone Looking to Buy a Console for GTA 6?
From our perspective, this is a point for Sony: Those upgrading solely for GTA 6 will find the PS5 currently cheaper and easier to acquire. You won't even need a disc drive anyway, as Rockstar is relying entirely on downloads for the launch. Even the boxed version, available from November 12th, will only contain a download code, according to PCGH. We've summarized the download size in our report on the file size and preload start on November 12th. So, make sure to plan for enough SSD space.
Rockstar has not officially announced a PC version yet. Those waiting are therefore speculating on something that doesn't officially exist yet. Keep an eye on retailer prices in the coming days, as the situation can change quickly.
