With GTA 6, Rockstar is focusing on an aspect that often gets lost in open-world games: the people on the streets. According to new statements from Love Magazine, there will simply be no more extras in the game. It's not long until the November 19th release – and details are piling up.
Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries told the magazine that no one on the team views pedestrians as mere background. Everything is part of the overall picture and creates the feeling of truly living in this wild world. Writing Director James Horton added: In a way, there is no “background” in this game, but only a foreground that you are currently not paying attention to. Everyone you encounter is the protagonist in their own story.
What's Different About NPCs in GTA 6?
The Game Informer report already showed that pedestrians appear visually much more diverse than in previous Rockstar games. To credibly portray the regions of Florida, the developers also spoke with real residents of the state. What's new now is the focus on language: a dedicated team exclusively handles NPC dialogues. Internally, the chatter on the street is no longer treated as background noise, but like any other line of dialogue.
The goal: If you stop in the middle of the city to eavesdrop on a marital dispute between two pedestrians, it should feel like a real conversation – and not like an endless loop.
Why Is This Technically So Difficult?
Unlike in film, developers cannot plan when a player will pass by. The environment must react to you, start the dialogue at the right moment, and cut it off as soon as you intervene. NPCs also react to your behavior, for example, if you walk around with a weapon drawn. This explains why Rockstar has assigned an entire team to this part of the game.
It remains to be seen whether NPCs also have routines and daily schedules. This has not yet been officially confirmed. A true “main character” involves more than just what they say.
What Does This Mean for Players?
For you, this primarily means: It's worth stopping more often in Vice City and its surroundings to listen. We've already seen how serious Rockstar is about details with Rockstar's commitment to detail. From our perspective, this is the right step: a world only feels alive when its secondary characters also have something to tell. However, whether the implementation lives up to the developers' promises will only become clear during gameplay.
