GTA 6: Art Director Garbut Speaks Out on 2022 Data Breach

The 2022 leak still resonates with Rockstar to this day. Art Director Aaron Garbut has now explained in a Bloomberg report by Jason Schreier how it felt for him and the team – and his words are quite explicit.

“It feels like someone rummaging through your dirty laundry,” Garbut stated, conveying the essence of his feelings. He added that it's like someone being inside your head: you see your early work out there, even though no one was ever supposed to see it. He called it “truly strangely intrusive” and emotionally difficult to cope with.

What Happened During the GTA 6 Leak of 2022?

In September 2022, a hacker gained access to an internal Rockstar Games Slack channel via phishing. Subsequently, around 90 gameplay clips from a very early GTA 6 build landed online. Even back then, it became known that Lucia would be the first female protagonist to take center stage.

Because the material originated from an unfinished state, there was a lot of mockery regarding clunky animations and an incomplete graphics framework. This precisely makes Garbut's statement understandable: work-in-progress stages were shown here that were never intended for public viewing.

Why is This Topic So Pressing Again Right Now?

Rockstar is currently experiencing the next wave of leaks. Since late August 2026, an account named “Cyberleek” has been publishing clips from a significantly more advanced version. Most recently, according to GamePro, even the final mission surfaced – with massive story spoilers, shortly before the release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar has only announced the PC release for 2027. You can find more background information in our report on the alleged end of Cyberleek's leaks.

What Does This Mean for You as a Player?

From our perspective, the situation is clear: if you want to avoid spoilers, you should treat social media, Reddit, and YouTube recommendations with caution in the coming weeks. The leaks are not only a PR problem for the team but also, as Garbut shows, a personal burden. How the community reacts to this remains to be seen – we'll be tracking it for you.
