GTA 6: Age Rating Reportedly Mentions 'Sex Scenes' for the First Time

GTA 6 could be the first Grand Theft Auto game to feature explicit sex scenes. This is suggested by an age rating description in the PlayStation Store, initially spotted by IGN and now reported by Eurogamer and GameStar.

According to Eurogamer, the PlayStation Store versions for New Zealand and Australia explicitly state that the game contains “sex scenes”. The UK version, meanwhile, refers to “sexual content” and displays the PEGI symbol for sex.

How Reliable is This Age Rating?

Caution is still warranted, however. Eurogamer notes that these descriptions might not be entirely accurate: they cannot be found independently on the official websites of the rating bodies, despite the ESRB, PEGI, and Australian Ratings Board logos appearing in the store. This is likely due to details still being under embargo. Furthermore, “sex scenes” doesn't necessarily imply the depiction of actual sexual intercourse.

Games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 also carry the PEGI sex symbol. Interestingly, The Blood of Dawnwalker does not, despite featuring partial nudity. According to Eurogamer, this suggests a more stringent classification than what would be given for mere suggestive content.

Have There Been Sex Scenes in Previous GTA Games?

Not directly. The “Hot Coffee” scandal in GTA: San Andreas originated from a mod that reactivated a minigame removed by Rockstar before release. Subsequent games featured visits to prostitutes with some nudity, but most of the action occurred off-camera. The scene in “The Ballad of Gay Tony” only briefly depicted two clothed figures. Therefore, it would be a new development for Rockstar to explicitly show such content.

Why Would This Be Plausible for GTA 6?

The game's narrative centers around the couple Jason and Lucia, with their relationship being a core element, according to Eurogamer. The official trailer already features the beginning of an intimate scene. Moreover, since GTA 5, explicit scenes have become more commonplace in games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur's Gate 3.

From our perspective, this comes as no surprise. For players, this means a high age rating is certainly expected, while specific details will remain under wraps until the game's release on November 19.
