Important Note: This is a rumor that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games.
Officially, Grand Theft Auto 6 will initially be released exclusively for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nevertheless, the rumor persists that Rockstar has long been internally working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version – and it doesn't seem to be entirely unfounded.
Where Does the GTA 6 Switch 2 Rumor Come From?
According to leaker NateTheHate, who is considered reliable, internal tests for a Switch 2 version are already underway at Rockstar. There is no official confirmation from Rockstar Games or publisher Take-Two yet – it is only known that Take-Two has generally pledged to support the Nintendo Switch 2 with “important titles,” without specifically naming GTA 6.
Would a Switch 2 Port of GTA 6 Even Be Technically Feasible?
According to reports, the biggest risk for a potential port is simply the sheer size of the game world. GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, encompassing Vice City, an area that is currently expected to be almost twice as large as Los Santos from GTA 5 – smoothly rendering an open world of this magnitude on mobile hardware is a completely different ball game than, for example, The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077, both of which were ported to Switch hardware years after their original release.
To put things into perspective, let's look at the past: Rockstar has already brought GTA 5 to new platforms years after its release, and the Switch also received at least a scaled-down version of older titles with the Definitive Edition of GTA: The Trilogy. A direct Switch 2 port of GTA 6 at or shortly after release is therefore not ruled out, but if it happens, it's more likely to be a later port with technical compromises – similar to its predecessors.
For players, this currently means above all: don't wait for a Switch 2 version to play GTA 6 promptly. Those who want to experience the game at launch can currently only do so with a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
