Rumor: Aspyr Reportedly Working on Shrek 2 Remastered

Important Note: This is a rumor and has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Aspyr or Microsoft.

Shrek 2 is reportedly getting a remaster. According to reports from Gematsu and Pure Xbox, picked up by Nintendo Life, Shrek 2 Remastered appeared in an Xbox Store listing that has since been removed. The developer is said to be Aspyr Media, the same studio that recently handled the ports of The Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth games for Nintendo platforms.

What Was in the Leaked Store Listing?

The listing is now offline, so we're relying on reports from our colleagues. According to these, the remaster will offer improved graphics, new features, and co-op for up to four players, both local and online. The leak does not specify a release window. So far, only Xbox has been mentioned as a platform. Additionally, a teaser trailer, allegedly in the style of GTA 6 trailers, has reportedly surfaced, hinting at Shrek 2.

  • Improved graphics compared to the 2004 original
  • New, undescribed features
  • Co-op for up to four players, local and online
  • Only Xbox mentioned so far, no release date

When Could the Official Reveal Happen?

Reports suggest that Aspyr could officially unveil the game as early as next week at the ID@Xbox Showcase, as Shrek is said to appear in the leaked teaser. This is not confirmed. Until then, everything remains speculation, even if an official store listing carries significantly more weight as a source than an anonymous forum post.

What Does This Mean for Players on PlayStation and Switch?

Aspyr typically brings its retro re-releases to all modern platforms. This suggests that Shrek 2 Remastered might not remain Xbox exclusive, even if the leak only mentions Xbox. However, this is our assessment and not a confirmed fact.

Why Is a Shrek 2 Remaster Even Interesting?

The original was released in 2004 for multiple platforms, including GameCube, and even received its own adaptation on the Game Boy Advance. Aspyr was already involved back then, handling the Mac port. From our perspective, a co-op remaster fits well with the current wave of nostalgia: a licensed game from the PS2 era, played by four people on the couch, certainly has its charm. Whether it holds up gameplay-wise, we'll only know once it's officially shown.
