Rumor: Ape Escape Revival Reportedly Coming From Sonic Mania Team

Important note: This is a rumor that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Sony.

Ape Escape could be making a comeback – and from a team that retro fans know well. According to industry journalist Jeff Gerstmann, the studio behind Sonic Mania is reportedly working on a revival of the PlayStation series. VGC claims to have heard similar information from its own sources. Sony has not commented on the matter.

Who Is Reportedly Developing the Ape Escape Revival?

Gerstmann stated on his podcast that, to his understanding, an external team is working on the game. He referred to Evening Star, the studio behind Sonic Mania and Penny’s Big Breakaway. Earlier, social media posts had linked Evening Star to the brand. However, Gerstmann himself emphasized that this is not the "best-documented" information with multiple sources. He heard it some time ago when the project had just received the green light. In his estimation, the game is still a long way from release.

He also stated that he does not believe the speculation that Team Asobi (Astro Bot) is behind it to be accurate.

Is Sony Looking to Revive More Old Franchises?

Citing multiple sources, VGC reports that Ape Escape is not the only dormant PlayStation franchise that Sony intends to license to smaller third-party studios. There's already an example of this: Everybody’s Golf went to Bandai Namco and was released in 2025 as Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots. Additionally, a remaster or remake for the Killzone series is reportedly in an early development phase. Most recently, reports also emerged about an Uncharted revival, though that is said to be an internal project at Naughty Dog.

What Does This Mean for PlayStation Fans?

From our perspective, the combination would be appealing: a team with experience in classic 2D platformer nostalgia trying its hand at a franchise that has been largely absent for years. Whether it will be a 3D platformer in the style of the PS1 originals or something entirely different remains completely open. As long as Sony doesn't announce anything, it all remains a rumor – and according to Gerstmann, a release is likely still some time away. We will keep you updated.
