Gears of War: E-Day Launches Tuesday on Steam – Metacritic 87, Premium Players Already Playing

Seven years after Gears 5, the wait is over: Gears of War: E-Day leads the Steam release week. The official launch is on Tuesday, October 6th, at 5 PM German time – on Steam as well as on PC Game Pass.

When and Where Does Gears of War: E-Day Release?

The shooter from The Coalition arrives on October 6th for PC. Those who pre-ordered the Premium Edition have been able to play since October 1st – an early access of five days is available only for an extra charge. Also, make sure to clear some space: the game will require around 120 GB on your SSD.

How Good Are the Initial Reviews?

Very good. According to GameStar, E-Day holds an 87 on Metacritic – making it the highest-rated Gears since Gears of War 3. GameStar itself awarded 86 points. In terms of gameplay, The Coalition has barely touched the formula: you'll stick to cover, saw your way through Locust creatures, and experience the series' characteristic robust violence. New features include revised movement with smoother sprinting and climbing. Technically, the game runs on Unreal Engine 5.

What is E-Day About?

E-Day is a prequel. The story takes place 14 years before the first Gears of War, specifically on the day the Locust Horde first emerges from the ground. This is convenient for newcomers: you don't need to know the predecessors to jump right in. We covered why the studio intentionally focused on more blood in our report on The Coalition's gore decision.

What Else is Releasing on Steam This Week?

The week is packed regardless. According to GameStar, other launches include:

  • Aion 2: Free-to-play MMORPG with aerial combat and a world said to be 36 times larger than the original
  • STAR WARS: Galactic Racer: Racing game with roguelike elements, where ramming and takedowns are allowed
  • Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival: Survival horror featuring Pinhead, voiced again by Doug Bradley
  • Order of the Sinking Star: Puzzle-adventure from Braid creator Jonathan Blow with over 1,000 puzzles

From our perspective, E-Day is therefore a definite must-play for everyone on PC who has been waiting a long time for new Gears content – especially since Game Pass makes entry affordable.
