Just how long will the new Fable actually be? At a Gamescom panel, Playground Games has now given at least a rough estimate – and that might already get some fans excited.
For Xbox fans, the Fable series is not just any franchise: the original trilogy from Lionhead Studios is still considered one of the most defining Xbox-exclusive RPGs of the 2000s and 2010s. After Lionhead's closure and the cancellation of the multiplayer spin-off Fable Legends, the series remained dormant for several years before Xbox handed the franchise over to Playground Games in 2020 – the studio that had previously made a name for itself primarily with the Forza Horizon series.
How Long Does Fable's Main Story Take?
According to Associate Directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler, the main quest is expected to take around 20 hours. Players who also tackle side quests, exploration, and optional activities can add another 15 to 20 hours to that – totaling a game with a good 35 to 40 hours of overall playtime for those who truly want to see everything.
What Does the Playtime Say About Fable's Scope?
For comparison: The latest major open-world RPGs from Xbox Game Studios, such as Starfield or Avowed, had main stories of similar lengths, ranging between 20 and 30 hours. With these figures, Fable therefore falls into a format that is now almost standard for the publisher's large-scale RPGs – not an epic 100-hour saga that some fans might have hoped for, but also not a short action experience. For a game explicitly positioned as Xbox's next big fantasy trump card, this is a conscious decision: preferring a dense, well-balanced experience over a bloated open-world game filled with filler content.
There is still no concrete release date for Fable; the game is currently slated for 2027. Until then, further details on gameplay, combat system, and scope are expected to follow.
