Anyone playing F-Zero 99 via Nintendo Switch Online is currently receiving a new update: Ver. 1.7.2 is live. However, Nintendo isn't revealing what exactly has changed – the patch notes essentially consist of a single sentence.
To put it into perspective for anyone new to F-Zero 99: The game transforms the classic SNES racer into a battle royale competition with up to 99 players on the track simultaneously. Instead of racing against a few AI opponents, you compete against a massive crowd of human rivals, complete with jostling, energy management, and the series' classic high-speed gameplay. The game is free to play for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers and has been gradually updated with new tracks, modes, and technical improvements since its release.
What the Patch Notes Say (and Don't Say)
Officially, it merely states that “several issues have been fixed.” Which specific bugs these are, whether there are balance adjustments to individual craft, or if there are technical improvements under the hood, remains entirely unknown. For an update significant enough to warrant a dedicated version number, this is unusually terse – even compared to previous F-Zero 99 patches, which at least listed a few changes in bullet points.
Not an Isolated Incident: F-Zero 99's Update History
However, this pattern of vague patch notes for F-Zero 99 isn't entirely new. Update Ver. 1.7.0 arrived in December 2025, followed by Ver. 1.7.1 in April 2026 – both times with rather brief official descriptions. For a free Nintendo Switch Online bonus game that has been continuously, albeit slowly, maintained since its release, this fits the picture: Nintendo clearly doesn't treat F-Zero 99 with the same communication diligence as a full-price release with its own marketing apparatus. For players, this means: anyone who has reported bugs can only wait and test for themselves whether their problem has disappeared with Ver. 1.7.2 – there's no official confirmation.
