What Does the New Black Myth: Zhong Kui Trailer Show?

The video, released by Game Science on August 20, 2026, provides the deepest insight yet into the upcoming action RPG. It features extensive combat sequences against several potential boss enemies, exploration of open areas, and smaller everyday scenes like a musical ensemble with traditional Chinese instruments or a scene where makeup is applied to a character. Particularly striking: Zhong Kui can summon a spirit during combat, who accompanies him as an ally for the entire encounter. Important for context: According to the developers, the shown material comes from an early, functional build in cinematic 21:9 format – a final release date has not yet been set.

How Does Zhong Kui Differ from Black Myth: Wukong?

Unlike the ape-like protagonist from Black Myth: Wukong, Zhong Kui plays as a human character with a noticeably different combat feel. The new parry system in the trailer appears more precisely timed and riskier than the predecessor's dodge-heavy combat system, complemented by the new spirit mechanic as a tactical layer. Game Science had already announced Zhong Kui as the second game in the Black Myth universe at Gamescom 2025, inspired by the figure of the demon vanquisher from Chinese mythology – since then, the project had been largely quiet, until now.

From our perspective, this long lead time is precisely what's remarkable: After the massive success of Wukong, Game Science is under immense pressure to deliver, and such a lengthy gameplay video so early in development is a confident step. We view the studio's open communication about this being a work-in-progress build positively – it tempers exaggerated expectations for a near release that simply isn't there yet.
