Beyond Good and Evil 2: Ubisoft Writer Confirms Ongoing Work on Long-Running Project

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still alive. Ubisoft Bordeaux writer Rik Godwin confirmed on Bluesky on September 24 and 25, 2026, that he has recently been actively involved in the colossal project. After years of radio silence, this is concrete evidence of life for one of the industry's longest-developing games.

What Did the Ubisoft Writer Actually Reveal?

Godwin works at Ubisoft Bordeaux as a Lead Writer and Associate Narrative Director, and was most recently involved as a writer on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, among other projects. In his Bluesky post, he wrote that in recent months he has been working on Beyond Good and Evil 2 in a supporting role as a consultant. He had specifically asked beforehand if he was allowed to say this publicly and received the green light. He did not provide specific details on content, team size, or timeline. Several insider portals, including Insider Gaming, GamesRadar+, and Comicbook, independently picked up on the statement and confirmed it through their own research.

How Long Has Beyond Good and Evil 2 Been in Development Hell?

The history of Beyond Good and Evil 2 is one of the most turbulent in the industry. The project was first announced in 2008 with a short teaser, after which it remained silent for a long time. It wasn't until 2017 that Ubisoft showed a comprehensive announcement trailer at E3, followed by a cinematic trailer in 2018 — since then, there have largely been few official signs of life again. Internally, the game underwent several reorientations, and the core team changed multiple times in the interim. In 2022, Beyond Good and Evil 2 officially surpassed Duke Nukem Forever as the game with the longest AAA development time ever; it has now been almost 19 years since the first announcement. When Ubisoft canceled several projects in January 2026, concerns grew that Beyond Good and Evil 2 might also be affected this time. However, the publisher confirmed at the time that the game was not among the titles that were shelved — Godwin's post now further corroborates that.

What Does This Sign of Life Mean for Players?

Honestly: Not much more than “it's not dead” can be gleaned from the post. There is still no release date, new gameplay material, or even a rough timeframe. Furthermore, a single writer's post is not an official Ubisoft update and says nothing about the actual development status or the size of the current team. After so many years of announcement pauses, skepticism in the community is understandably high — similar status updates have occurred multiple times in the past without anything more following. From our perspective, this is still a positive signal: As long as writers like Godwin are allowed to publicly discuss their involvement, the project at least doesn't seem to be on ice. Those who want to stay informed can find current information on Ubisoft's official Beyond Good and Evil 2 page.
