For over 25 years and more than 1,200 episodes, Ash Ketchum has cared for practically every one of his Pokémon, no matter how short their time together was. But with one single companion, the series makes a striking exception to this day: Primeape, whom Ash left behind very early in his journey – and who barely ever reappeared afterwards.
How It All Began: A Wild Mankey and a Fighting Tournament
The story begins in the Kanto region, when Ash catches a wild Mankey. After a tough battle, it evolves into the aggressive Primeape. Shortly thereafter, the group meets Anthony, a trainer specializing in Fighting-type Pokémon, who is currently training for the renowned P1 Tournament.
Why Ash Left His Pokémon Behind
Anthony offers to train Primeape intensively so that it has a real chance at the P1 Champion title. Ash is convinced and hands over his Pokémon – even though Primeape clearly finds the farewell difficult. Unlike with Butterfree or Pidgeot, where the series stages the departure as a conscious emotional moment, Primeape's leaving seems much more casual.
What Happened Since – And What Didn't
Unlike other Pokémon Ash gave away, Primeape never got a real reunion. Its only known appearance afterward is a seconds-long flashback in a much later episode, nothing more – no return, no battle, no concluding moment. For a series that otherwise meticulously keeps track of Ash's former companions, this is unusual. From our perspective, this particular case shows how differently the writers have handled Ash's team over the decades: some Pokémon like Pikachu or Charizard received entire story arcs, while others completely vanished after a single battle. Primeape is thus something like the forgotten chapter in Ash's otherwise so carefully told journey.
