Normally, things are clear with Steam: refunds are only available if you've played for a maximum of two hours and the purchase was made no more than 14 days ago. A Battlefield 6 player has now completely shattered this rule – and still got their money back.
Reddit user ExplorEverythingOnce posted their refund screenshot in the Battlefield subreddit: $109.24 for the Phantom Edition, refunded after approximately 470 hours of playtime. That's more than 230 times the officially allowed playtime for a refund.
According to the player, the reason was: with a patch, EA quietly removed the Rush, King of the Hill, and Squad Deathmatch modes from matchmaking – hidden among minor bug fixes, almost a year after release. What's particularly galling: according to the thread, Rush is still advertised as an available mode on the official store page, even though it's effectively gone.
His argument to Steam Support was that he had explicitly purchased the game because of Rush, the mode where he had by far the most playtime. In addition, his Steam history included – 22 years as a customer, over 2500 games in his library, and only a single refund in all that time. The support agent agreed with him and paid back the full amount.
In the thread, the community is actively discussing: some celebrate it as a long-overdue way of handling removed content, while others are skeptical whether this can truly be replicated or if Steam simply made a one-time gesture of goodwill. play3.de also picks up on the case as a possible precedent.
Important: Steam has not confirmed any official policy change. This is an isolated incident based on an individual support decision – whether other players with similar reasoning will also be lucky is an open question. Those affected can refer to the official Steam refund process and explicitly mention removed content.
